What kind of shrub would be good to plant in front of my house and that doesn't grow very big?

I want to plant a shrub that's a burgundy color but I'm not sure what it's called. I see it a lot around restaurants especially.

it really depends on what zone you live in

Then you can see which plants and shrubs grow in that area.

The best thing I can recommend is going to your local nursery and speaking with someone there. (you'll have to go there eventually to buy the shrub, why not check out whats available to you.) You'll probably have this shrub for a few years so it's best to do it right. Best of luck to you!

Reply:It would be the barberries it does have thorns, so were some good leather gloves.
Reply:Photinia is a beautiful shrub that has wonderful burgandy leaves. The new leaves come out a fantasic pink/reddish colour that is out of this world. The new leaves colour last well into the summer. The plant is fairly slow growing, does best in full sun or light shade. It is an evergreen that has a spread of up to 5/6 feet when FULLY mature. It can grow quite tall, but where as it is a slow grower, it is easily contained. One word of caution would be NOT to sprinkle with water during hot sunny days, or the plant will develop burn marks. Have a look at one in a nursery and see for yourself how georgeous these plants are. They do well in zones 7-9. Well worth finding a place in your garden. Good-Luck!
Reply:Barberry, this is a picture of one, it's unshaped though

Reply:Burning Bush might be a good option. Its colors are brilliant in the fall.
Reply:Try a dogwood, they have lovely red bark, and produce tiny pink flowers. They do not like full sun.Half time in shade is best, not all day.you will have to trim it every other year to keep it small.

Reply:Dwarf Burford Holly (Ilex cornuta 'Dwarf Burford'). This one can reach 5' x 4' but lends itself well to pruning to keep lower if necessary. It has glossy dark green leaves with a single spine at the end of the leaf. It also has prolific red berries.
