I have alpine currants, blackberries and tayberries in a smaller area of my garden. All grow well in my zone 4 garden although the blackberry does have a tendency to spread from the underground roots and the tayberry has thorns.

The alpine currant is easily trimmed and is a nice compact shrub that is not invasive. Just make sure that you purchase a plant that is already producing berries. The flowers are not really noticeable, though.

My Italian plum (self pollinating) and Manchu cherry have beautiful spring flowers and the birds enjoy them. These are larger plants, though. I have listed them as I am unsure of what size of plant you are looking for.
Reply:Have you tried self pollinating dwarf cherry bushes. They get about five feet tall, produce pretty flowers and real eatable cherry's. You can actually build a hedge fence with them.
