It's more of a tree actually. Had one in my back garden in a house or two ago.
Reply:They grow on the blackthorn bush,we have lots of them here and my husband makes sloe gin with them, very potent stuff, very good for killing colds and the cold.
Reply:It's the Blackthorn. It produces sloes in the autumn. They're ideal for popping into a jar, with gin and sugar, to make sloe gin just in time for Christmas!
Reply:BLACKTHORN.
Reply:oh yes , i say oh yes our Ashly...it the fantastic blackthorn bush/tree...produces very bright blue berries about September time, trouble is its a race between you ,the birds, and the ripening of the fruit, plus other eagle eyed berry pickers to get to the fruit first...of course its all a matter of timing,as if you pick two early there not ripe ,if a bit two late some chuff else has got them ,or the blumming birds..you have to get the timing just right..like i have..cos i ve got 2 great trees / bushes? and i ll tell you now,if you get hold of a few , freeze some 4 later, and you will be in-control of dynamite? get a bottle of gin /cheap..or / dear fill the jar a quarter of the way with sloes,...same with brown sugar...then top up with gin...you can also add a bit of Cinnamon, depending on taste, plus you can do this with vodka ,.. oh oh ...smokin...? fantastic?just one additional tip.. b 4 you try to beat the birds.. if you find a bush / tree..try the fruit ..if you bite it , and all your mouth dries up immediately, there not ready,, wait a couple of weeks till they taste fairly sweet, and hey ...you re in business?? also once you've made the sloe-gin its best to leave it --if you can ..for as long as possible..it improves with age...i love the stuff????????????

That the Blackthorn is the one,

But please excuse this little rhyme,

I'm only having fun.

My Shorter Oxford tells me,

and its words are o so true,

That the dear old Prune Spinosa,

is the one that answers you.

It is a globus blue-black drupe,

whatever drupes may be

but you'll find all of the details ,

In the Oxford Diction ree.

I've been told I ought to sloe down

So I'm going to down some sloes.

And probly I'll be fast asleep,

By the time they reach my toes.
