Can anyone recommend a pretty evergreen shrub, (no pine-looking needles). I live in zone 6, Cincinnati, OH.?

I am looking for a shrub to plant in front of my house. I want something that will look good in the winter, but I hate evergreens with pine-looking needles.

Encore Azalea! They are evergreen, the leaves are soft (unlike the regular) and they bloom several times a year. I have them because, like you, I wanted something to look pretty all year, but not any type of pine or holly (too prickly for me.)

I'm in zone 7 and they do great!!

Good luck!! :)
Reply:Holly (Ilex), Rhododendrons, Boxwood (Buxus), Euonymus, Pieris, Mountain Laurel (Kalmia).
Reply:Holly, for one.
Reply:Juniper.

There are a few varieties. Look under Google Images
Reply:These are my favourite evergreens. All are fine for your zone

Pieris-pink or red new leaf growth.white flowers summer

Camellia- large pink, red or white flowers, early spring

Rhododendron-large pink, red, white or purple flowers, spring

Escallonia-med. pink, red or white flowers, summer

Jasminum humile-small yellow flowers spring to fall

Choisia ternata-med.white fragrant flowers, summer

If I had to pick one it would be escallonia because it flowers for ages and it can be easily trimmed to shape if you like!
Reply:Needle palm. this Palm tree is a bush palm and the worlds most cold hardy palm tree. it is cold hardy to 0 with NO damage and -10 with damage. can survive to -20 with protection. it is cold hardy to zone 6b. also the trunk which isnt noticable has needles so you can use this to keep people from going too close to the house
