Why won't my euonymus (burning bush) shrub turn red in the fall?

The bush is 5 years old, planted on the sunny east side of the house, plenty of water from roof, fed shrub food stakes, and simply stays green until the winter wind shakes the dead leaves from it! WHY won't it turn red.

Why won't my euonymus (burning bush) shrub turn red in the fall?
Some plants can get good autumn colour virtually anywhere, some need it to be very cool to colour well. I live in a warm temperate area and some plants that are meant to go red in autumn only ever go yellow or orange and never go red. You might find the shelter of the house does not allow the plant to get cool enough. Plants that are on the dry side colour better as well ( but euonymus alatus doesn't like to be too dry).

I wouldn't overfeed this may not be helping as well.

Do you have the right variety? Did you buy it in autumn when it had autumn coloured leaves? I have a Manchurian pear I bought in summer with green leaves, it has never coloured in autumn properly. It goes a yellow/orange instead of red. Since then I buy all my autumn leaf colour plants in autumn so I can see how good the autumn colours on that plant can be. You will be surprised when you stand in the nursery the colour variations due to their genes. If you have never seen this plant with red leaves ever, I would buy another in autumn in full autumn colour and put it in a sunny, less sheltered spot. If your neighbours have plants that colour red you know your area is cool enough for them to colour well. Good luck.
Reply:Fertilize it... Use organic compost material and you may want to try some Miracle Grow...
Reply:the colors plants turn depends on the acidity of the soil.
